Gross to Net in Poland: How Your Salary Is Actually Calculated
Between the gross figure in a Polish employment contract and the money that reaches your account are four deductions, taken in sequence. The order is what makes the arithmetic surprising: each deduction is calculated on a base the previous one has already reduced, so a flat “about 30% goes” is wrong, and wrong in the direction that costs you.
Here is the whole path, line by line, at 2026 rates.
Step 1 — your social contributions
Calculated on the full gross:
| Contribution | Rate |
|---|---|
| Pension (emerytalne) | 9.76% |
| Disability (rentowe) | 1.50% |
| Sickness (chorobowe) | 2.45% |
| Total | 13.71% |
That is your share. Your employer separately pays roughly 20.48% on top of your gross, which never appears on your payslip but is very real money to the company.
Step 2 — the health contribution
9% — but not of gross. The base is gross minus the social contributions from step one.
This is the main reason flat percentages do not reconcile. And unlike the pre-2022 rules, the health contribution is no longer deductible from your income tax. It simply reduces what you receive.
Step 3 — the income tax base
From gross, subtract the social contributions and the standard deductible cost (koszty uzyskania przychodu): a fixed 250 zł a month if you work in the town where you live, 300 zł if you commute from another one. Round to whole złoty. That is your tax base.
Step 4 — income tax
12% on annual income up to 120,000 zł, and 32% on anything above it. The first 30,000 zł of annual income is tax-free, and that allowance is delivered monthly as a 300 zł reduction in the tax withheld.
But only if you have filed PIT-2 with your employer.
If you have not, your employer is required to withhold without the reduction, and you are giving up 300 zł a month until your annual return recovers it. File PIT-2 when you start. It is the most common and most easily avoided loss of money in Polish employment, and it costs a new employee 3,600 zł over a year.
Why “minus 30%” fails
Because the deductions are sequential rather than parallel, and because the tax rate depends on your annual income rather than the month in front of you. Someone who crosses 120,000 zł in October will see a lower net in November on an unchanged gross. That is not a payroll error — it is the second band starting.
The net salary calculator works through it step by step and shows each deduction separately, which is the only way to see where the money goes.
What changes on a different contract
Mandate contract (umowa zlecenie). Its own statutory minimum hourly rate — 31.40 zł in 2026. Sickness cover is voluntary, and deductible costs are a percentage (usually 20%) rather than a fixed amount. Net is often higher on the same gross, and the protections are fewer.
Specific-task contract (umowa o dzieło). Generally outside social and health contributions — but only where the work genuinely is a specific, defined result. Dressing ordinary employment in this contract is reclassified, with arrears and interest.
B2B. Not a salary at all, but trade between two businesses. Comparing B2B net with employment net is meaningless without also counting your own ZUS, your own accounting and the employment protections you no longer have.
Three things to check on your own payslip
Is PIT-2 filed? If there is no monthly 300 zł reduction in the tax line, it is not.
Is the deductible cost right? 250 zł or 300 zł, depending on whether you commute. Small, but it is yours.
Is PPK being deducted? If you did not opt out, part of your gross goes to a capital pension account. Not a loss — but it lowers your net, and it is better known in advance than discovered.
Check it on your own figures
The net salary calculator covers employment, mandate, specific-task and B2B at 2026 rates, with every component broken out. If you are the one hiring, the employer cost calculator shows the same salary from the other side.
Frequently asked questions
- How do you calculate net salary from gross in Poland?
- Sequentially, not as a single percentage. Social contributions come off the full gross — 9.76% pension, 1.50% disability, 2.45% sickness, 13.71% in total. The 9% health contribution is then calculated on gross minus those social contributions. Income tax is charged on gross less social contributions less the standard deductible cost of 250 zł or 300 zł, at 12% up to 120,000 zł of annual income and 32% above.
- What is PIT-2 and why does it matter?
- The form an employee files with their employer so that the monthly 300 zł tax reduction is applied. Without it the employer must withhold without the reduction, costing 300 zł a month — 3,600 zł a year — recovered only through the annual return. Filing it when you start is the single most easily avoided loss of money in Polish employment.
- Why does my net pay fall late in the year on the same gross?
- Because the tax rate depends on annual income. Once your cumulative income passes 120,000 zł, the excess is taxed at 32% instead of 12%, so the month you cross the threshold and every month after it produce a lower net on an unchanged gross. It is the second band starting, not a payroll error.
- What is the minimum wage in Poland in 2026?
- 4,806 zł gross a month under an employment contract, with a minimum hourly rate of 31.40 zł for mandate contracts. There is one increase this year rather than the two seen in some earlier years.
- Is umowa zlecenie or B2B better than employment?
- By take-home alone, usually B2B then mandate then employment — but take-home alone is the wrong comparison. B2B means your own ZUS contributions, your own accounting and reporting, and none of the employment protections. And treating what is genuinely an employment relationship as a mandate or B2B contract gets reclassified, with arrears and interest.
