Which insurance does an Erasmus+ trainee need?
At least accident insurance and liability insurance at the workplace; the Learning Agreement records whether the sending institution or the host provides them. Health cover comes on top: the European Health Insurance Card for participants insured in the EU, private insurance otherwise, and at least €30,000 of cover for a Schengen visa.
Accident and liability insurance
The Commission’s guidelines for the Learning Agreement set the minimum: accident insurance for damage to the trainee at the workplace, and liability insurance for damage the trainee causes there. Either the sending institution or the host provides it, and records it in Table B or Table C.
MEYİS expects this insurance from the sending organisation.
Health insurance
Participants insured in the EU bring the European Health Insurance Card, which gives access to medically necessary state healthcare during a temporary stay. It is not travel insurance: it does not cover private healthcare or a return flight home.
Participants who cannot use the card should have private health insurance for the whole stay. At MEYİS, health insurance is the participant’s or the sending organisation’s responsibility.
Insurance for a visa
A Schengen visa (type C) requires health insurance valid in all Schengen countries, with cover of at least €30,000. A national visa (type D) for a longer stay has its own insurance rules: check them with the consulate before you buy a policy.
What we are asked about this
01 Is the European Health Insurance Card enough for an Erasmus+ traineeship?
No. It covers medically necessary state healthcare, but not accident and liability insurance at the workplace, private healthcare or a return flight home.
02 Who provides accident and liability insurance?
The sending institution or the host, as recorded in the Learning Agreement (Table B or C). MEYİS expects it from the sending organisation.
03 How much health insurance does a Schengen visa need?
At least €30,000 of cover, valid in all Schengen countries, as the Polish consulate’s visa requirements state.
